A man in his 30s has died after he was struck by a garbage truck in Sydney’s inner suburbs early on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to George St at Haymarket just after 6am following reports an e-bike rider had been hit near Railway Square.

Three of the four southbound lanes on George St have been closed as police establish a large crime scene, causing significant delays during the early peak hour.

It’s understood the garbage truck had been collecting bins on Little Regent St before pulling out onto George St, where it collided with an e-bike rider.

A blue tent has been erected around the truck, as intrigued peak-hour commuters gathered along nearby footpaths and bus stops.

Dozens of officers, including highway patrol cars and police motorcycles, are on site, cordoning off the area and extending the exclusion zone to parts of the footpath.

The garbage truck involved remains stationary in the driveway of the Mercure Hotel.

Despite the closure, buses are still moving through the precinct, with police escorting services in and out of Railway Square to keep commuters moving.

NSW Premier Chris Minns offered his condolences, telling 2GB the tragedy was heartbreaking.

“This is obviously terrible, and your heart goes out to that man’s family on the eve of Christmas,” he said.

Several witnesses told The Daily Telegraph they were shocked and horrified by the incident unfolding in front of them.

The driver of the truck – a 28-year-old man – was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Police are expected to remain at the scene for several hours while the Crash Investigation Unit examines the circumstances leading up to the man’s death.
