A motel manager has been sentenced in court after he recruited four men – one armed with an axe – to intimidate a tenant who was behind in his rent. Here’s what happened in court.

A Central Coast motel manager who led a group of men – one armed with an axe – to confront a tenant over unpaid rent, has been sentenced in court.
Madyn ‘Mick’ Kassem, 29, was sentenced at the District Court in Gosford after pleading guilty to aggravated enter dwelling in company, intimidation, and demanding property with menacing behaviour.
Kassem was the manager of The Entrance Motel, across the road from the Diggers club at Long Jetty.
The court heard the victim owed $1300 in rent and had told Kassem he could not pay because his mother had died.
About a week and a half later, at 1.45am on July 22, 2023, Kassem arrived at the motel car park with four other men.
One of the men was armed with an axe. Kassem and the group began knocking on the victim’s door, saying, “You lying piece of s---, I know you’re in here.”
When the victim opened the door, Kassem demanded, “Where is my money?” The victim replied, “I’ve got no money.”
Kassem and the four men then entered the room. One said, “You’re ripping him off. You’re taking advantage of him.”
The victim was then told he had ten minutes to leave the motel.
A friend of the victim, who was also staying at the motel, walked out to the bathroom where the confrontation was happening. He told the men he had no transport to leave.
One of the unknown males pointed to a Mitsubishi Mirage parked outside and said to the woman who owned it, “What about this car out here?”
Kassem also asked the woman about the car, before demanding, “Where are the keys? It’s our car now.”
“You are not f---ing having them. You’re not getting my car. I don’t give a f--- what youse do,” the woman replied.
The victim’s de facto partner called police. Kassem and the four men left before officers arrived, but Kassem later returned and told the victim: “I feel bad for what’s happened. You can stay another night.”
The court heard Kassem was experiencing immense pressure, depression and anxiety at the time of the offending.
He told the court he was deeply ashamed and embarrassed by his actions, and understood the impact they had.
He said a build-up of emotions had caused him to lose control and confront the victim over the unpaid rent.
Judge Tanya Bright sentenced Kassem to a two-year and six-month intensive corrections order.
