‘It’s exhausting’: Abbie Chatfield dodges questions on break-up

Weathering a storm of speculation about her relationship, Abbie Chatfield says expectations she’ll overshare on her personal life are annoying “but I like my job enough to cop it”.

TV and radio personality Abbie Chatfield has been the centre of speculation this week over revelations she and partner Konrad Bien-Stephen have broken up. She’s yet to announce their current relationship status.

“It’s really exhausting. I am a natural oversharer, so it comes naturally, but sometimes I do have negative repercussions where people expect me to tell them everything in my personal life, and they also expect that my life is entirely what they see online,” she said.

Chatfield’s comments came as The Daily Telegraph asked The Masked Singer host how she’s weathered the paparazzi storm over the past few days, and whether she could confirm or deny a break up.

Chatfield did not provide an answer on the latter, but said all the attention “is all part and parcel of this career, and I love my career.

“But I can’t deny that it’s very annoying. It makes me feel like I’m constantly being watched and that isn’t fun, but I like my job enough to cop it.”

On Monday, news broke that Bien-Stephen had “hooked up” with fellow Bachelor franchise alum Megan Marx, on set of new reality show The Challenge Australia, in Argentina.

Chatfield addressed this on Instagram: “I’ve seen the articles about Konrad,” she wrote.

“He’s out of the country so I won’t be commenting on anything until he’s home. Can everyone not be so dramatic please [sic] and relax. Both of us are totally okay.”

She also asked paparazzi “to get their daily pic of [her] picking up dog poo then let [her] get a coffee in peace.”

Chatfield and Bien-Stephen announced only six months ago that they had opened their relationship to other sexual partners.

The influencers have talked and posted, at length, about the finer details of their romantic journey, which began in November 2021.

Because Chatfield declared their relationship prior to the finale of Brooke Blurton’s season of The Bachelorette, on which Bien-Stephen starred, it has dominated headlines since its inception.

While most reality TV rejects fade back into obscurity, Chatfield has leveraged her stint as a loved-hated Bachelor personality into a burgeoning media empire.

Her work plate currently includes a nightly radio spot, podcast, her own fashion line, a gig as the host of Love Island Australia Afterparty, a TV pilot, multiple commercial deals and her own brand of vibrator, and judging The Masked Singer, which she called “pure fun,” with “no villains.”

Despite having a PA and a manager, “I am at the point of breakdown almost every day,” she joked. “95 per cent of my waking time is spent thinking about or doing work. Even when I’m at dinner with friends, I’m probably talking about work.”

The work of being a public figure, of course, has its downsides. “Yeah I mean, it is frustrating,” Chatfield said. “I sometimes feel like my life isn’t my own and it’s just a vessel for content for other people.”
