Bar and cafe in historic Parramatta Boiler Room latest drawcard to Sydney’s west

A new bar and cafe in Parramatta’s heritage precinct heralds the city’s latest post-Covid dining hotspot.

NSW tourism to receive $500 million boost

Sydney’s newest dining destination could be in the west – with plans underway for a high class new bar and cafe in a historic nook of Parramatta.

Work has started on a fit out of the historic Parramatta Hospital Boiler Room and dining area, built in 1888, to house a new 200 square metre dining hotspot in the heart of Parramatta’s North Heritage Precinct.

The NSW Government is now calling for operators to put their hand up to run the eatery, with a vision of making the historic corner of western Sydney a post-Covid alfresco food, coffee and wine centrepiece attracting visitors from across the city.

“This is an ideal opportunity for an innovative business to open a contemporary and stylish cafe-bar in North Parramatta’s stunning cultural and heritage landmark, right next to the Western Sydney Startup Hub which will give thousands of entrepreneurs space to innovate from mid-2022,” Minister Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said.

“We are looking for a business that can offer day-to-night service and a high standard of food, plus the ability to cater for a growing and eclectic clientele.”

The use of the historic site as a new bar and cafe was actioned following community consultation in 2018, with works to the cafe approved by Heritage NSW and Parramatta City Council.

Minister Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey said the restoration project would bring modern-day use and investment to a historic site.

“These unique spaces and cultural venues will present additional opportunities to the day-to-day trade for the successful cafe operator,” she said.

“We cannot wait to hear from operators with vision who will embrace being part of this incredible community space in the heart of Western Sydney.”

It’s one of a number of new eateries set to take the city by storm in 2022 – with new bars and restaurants ranging from the newly-opened Lady Banks Rooftop bar at Bankstown, to the three-level terrace restaurant Shell House nestled on the city’s Margaret Street.
