Tennant Creek’s Barkly Hardware and Gas shutting in 2025, casuals first to be let go

Residents in a Territory town will be spending 2025 potentially driving more than 500km to pick up their hardware supplies, with the only store that stocks it shutting up shop.

Tennant Creek residents will potentially have to drive more than 500km to get new tools, as the town’s only hardware store prepares to shut its doors.

On Wednesday, a letter leaked on social media said Barkly Hardware and Gas would cease trading on January 31, 2025.

Ahead of the store shutting down, it will no longer open on weekends, and credit will no longer be available, the letter states.

The letter – which wished staff a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year – gave no reason for the closure of the store.

It was signed by Centrecorp Aboriginal Investment Corporation chief executive Randle Walker.

This masthead understands three casual employees were let go on Wednesday afternoon.

The store is jointly owned by Centrecorp and Julalikari Aboriginal Corporation, who each have a 50 per cent share.

This masthead did not receive a response from either as to why the store is shutting.

Mr Walker also did not respond to queries.

Barkly Plumbing Services managing director Brian Curran said he and his employees used the store daily.

“It will be a complete loss to the town … another thing that’s going to be gone,” he said.

Mr Curran said getting both the basics and what’s required for the job will become more difficult when the store shuts – potentially impacting how quickly jobs get done.

In 2022, the property and business sold for $850,000 by Andrews Property.

The listing describes the hardware store as having an “exciting profit and financial position”.
