Another hospitality business shuts doors

THE MEMO Club is the latest in a growing list of NT hospitality businesses to close its doors, after just two years of trading

THE MEMO Club is the latest in a growing list of Alice Springs hospitality businesses to close its doors, after just two years of trading.

The cause of the closure is not known but David Harris, a spokesman for Licensing NT, said the club had indicated verbally that it intended to close, and confirmed it was not a licensing issue.

Memo Club Committee Chairman, Randle Walker, sent a short statement to the Advocate: “The Memo Club has seen deteriorating revenue over the past few months and as a result the committee has determined to cease trading as at close of business Friday, November 4.”

“The club will be in contact with all suppliers to seek to make arrangements to settle outstanding debts.”

Nearby businesses have welcomed the news, with one shop owner saying it was the “best thing to happen on Todd Street” in the past four years.

“Since the Memo opened business has gone down,” the owner, who didn’t want to be identified, said.

“But this week we’re having really good business days so far. It feels different.”

A spokesman for the 24- hour store said he was glad The Memo had shut as the anti-social behaviour used to stop customers coming in.

It’s not known what effect the closure will have on the bowls club, which has been running since 1958. “The NT Government sold the site to Centrecorp on the understanding that the bowls club would be looked after,” said committee member David Knight.

Memo club was a tenant.
