Police arrest man who allegedly set servo, two cars on fire

Police have arrested a man who allegedly set fire to the inside of a service station in Katherine before also setting fire to two getaway vehicles and bushland on Tuesday.

Investigators allege the 29-year-old was involved in a robbery at the servo using a white Toyota HiLux at about 1.10pm before the vehicle was seen driving dangerously around the region throughout the evening.

The same HiLux was then later found burnt out at the scene of another unlawful entry at a business on the Stuart Hwy in Birdum where a Toyota LandCruiser was also stolen.

At midnight, the LandCruiser was spotted travelling along the highway approaching Darwin’s Rural Area and police from Darwin, Palmerston, Batchelor and Adelaide River were all deployed, including officers from the dog squad and Strike Force Trident.

An NT Police spokesman said the squads successfully deployed tyre spikes, bringing the vehicle to a halt on Beaumont Road, Humpty Doo.

“The driver allegedly exited the vehicle (and) set it alight, before fleeing into nearby bushland, setting the bushland alight as well,” he said.

“Members from the dog operations unit apprehended the man a short time later while the NT Fire and Rescue Service extinguished both the vehicle and bushland fires.”

The spokesman said the man remained in police custody on Wednesday afternoon and was expected to be charged with multiple serious offences.

“NT Police would like to thank the members of the public who made contact and provided vital information on the movements of the two vehicles,” he said.

At about 11pm on Sunday night, police responded to reports of four armed male youths entering a servo on Katherine Terrace in Katherine.

The boys allegedly threatened an employee before stealing two tills and fleeing the scene, only to abandon their haul a short time later.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to probe a string of vehicle thefts and ram raids across Darwin during the weekend, with a number of suspects now in custody.

Police arrested two youths aged 13 and 16 on Saturday after a woman allegedly woke to find the pair inside her home before they stole a number of items and fled the scene in her car.

Officers later spotted the vehicle driving erratically in Coolalinga, along with a second car, which they pursued through the northern suburbs before finding the vehicles abandoned and the youths hiding nearby.

Again the officers later saw the vehicle in the company of another stolen car allegedly speeding on McMillans Rd, before following them to Palmerston where one of them stopped and the occupants attempted to flee.

Three youths were arrested and were assisting police with their inquiries into a total of three commercial ram raids that night.

An NT Police spokesman urged anyone with any information about any of the incidents to come forward.

“These types of incidents affect not only the business owners but also the wider community and the police are committed to ensuring the safety and security of Territorians,” he said.

“These incidents remind us that we must all work together to prevent criminal activities in our community.
