Replay: Palmerston v Tiwi Bombers (Women) - 2024-25 NTFL elimination final

The Palmerston Magpies have scored their first finals win in six years as they comfortably downed the Tiwi Bombers in a wet eliminator at TIO Stadium.

Tiwi had made account of Palmerston in their regular season meetings, but fitness came to play this time around with the Bombers the more fatigued as the match wore on.

The Magpies resisted a flurry of Tiwi goals in the final quarter as Tatyana Perry scored four of her own, securing an impressive 10.7 (67) to 3.6 (24) win.

Tiwi had a disappointing start to the contest, unable to capitalise on early forward pressure and scoring chances.

Pies’ Gorjia Davey kicked the first major of the match on the counter, putting pressure back on the Bombers.

Palmerston continued its assault kicking four unanswered goals to take a healthy lead as Ciana Niesner, Marika Carlton and Taelah Smith laid the platform for the Magpies.

The heavens opened up during the big break and stuck around for the majority of the third resulting in both teams struggling for possession and consistency and just four points between the pair.

Jelena Tipungwuti then hit back for Tiwi to put some belief back in the Bombers, but Palmerston’s Sophie James quickly countered with a goal of her own to peg back the score.

A flat footed Tiwi stuck in the fight despite looking the more fatigued of the sides until the Magpies started firing at will in the back end.

Tatayana Perry nailed four unanswered goals in the final period taking advantage of the ball as it came her way.

Veteran and newly inducted Palmerston life member Natasha Medbury said the win was a long awaited one.

“We haven’t played finals in six years so we made sure we had an extra loud winning song,” she said.

“We have a really young team, I’m out there up front at 45 while the next oldest there is 18, so we’ve had a lot of youngsters this season and they’ve all gelled well.

“I’ve been around a long time and the feeling among this group is unbelievable, the commitment and stability is promising.

“Now we’ll keep our emotions in check, make sure we have a fantastic training and lead up so we are fit and ready to fire next weekend.”

Medbury heaped praise on the magnificent Marika Carlton who took the game by the scruff of the neck.

“She is a highlight reel and I’ve been around since the first season of women’s footy up here and I’ve commentated for a long time and let me tell you, I’ve never seen a more talented and gifted individual male or female than what Marika is,” Medbury said.

“And since her first season last year she’s never been hesitant, she doesn’t care about the side she’s facing and gives absolutely everything. I love watching her play and I’m very glad I’m on her team.”

PREVIEW

The Palmerston Magpies and Tiwi Bombers both narrowly missed out on playing the senior women’s finals last season, but now they’re in and want to make an impact.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 2.15pm on Saturday.

Last times these sides met it was a thrilling one point win for the Bombers, surviving a late, prolonged assault from their foes at Cazalys Arena.

It was a stark difference from their earlier meeting on Bathurst Island where Tiwi ran away with the win and a sign the Magpies will be a danger side come finals.

Palmerston have plenty of talent in their ranks led by Ella Ward, who’s one of the premier rucks, and the ever-exciting Marika Carlton.

The Magpies are great at creating chances for themselves, but have sometimes fell awry due to accuracy in front of goals this season, an area that would have helped give them a win against Tiwi.

The Bombers are a side that know how to create chances too and with plenty of firepower across their side, they’ll be positioning to claim their third win against Palmerston this season.

Maria Rioli is chief among those exciting options, well aided by the likes of Arthurina Moreen and Freda Puruntatameri.
