The Saints have soared into the NTFL Women’s Premier League top two off the back of a brilliant bounce back win over a tough Tigers. Watch the full match REPLAY.

The St Mary’s women have leaped into the top two after a strong showing against Nightcliff, which will give them plenty of confidence heading into the back end of the season.

The Green Machine were narrow losers to the Tigers in Round 1 of the season, but with an extra week back from the break were the more match fit side in the encounter.

It showed in their early pressure and dominance as they bookended the match with their strongest quarters to win 6.9 (45) to 2.3 (15), their 10th win in a row.

Billie Byers and Paula Pavic held court in the midfield pushing the ball forward and Isabella Turner, the match’s only multiple goal scorer, blazed through the opener.

It was pressure the Saints would keep coming, and despite Nightcliff’s defensive prowess they broke through again off the back of some great roving from young gun Shakalia Gardiner-Dunn.

Nightcliff had to make the big effort plays to strike back, working through usual performers Gabrielle Deller and Sophie Hatzismalis in the middle to bring the ball forward.

They kept the pressure coming despite a miss from prolific goal sneak Cassie McWilliam and within moments it was Zimra Hussian who benefitted from the bounce of a ball to goal for Tigers.

Though it was a slightly sluggish return for the side that had a prolonged break, something the Saints defence were all too happy to take advantage of.

There was some confusion on the toll of three quarter time when a free kick was given to Nightcliff from the goal square after the siren.

Megan Johnson neatly kicked it through and despite their lack of scores up to that point it was enough to keep the Tigers in the contest into the final term.

However, the final period was dominated again by St Mary’s who had kept matters kicking along and dragged the score out until the end.

Turner with another, a slew of behinds and Caitlin Sargent firming matters up with the final major were the marks of another dominant quarter.

There’s very little splitting St Mary’s and Nightcliff on the NTFL women’s table with their battle likely playing a large role on deciding who will finish the season in second.

St Mary’s returned from the Christmas break with a bang, scoring 18 goals in a 125-point rout of a hapless Waratah side.

It was the Saints ninth-straight win of the season, with the side’s only losses coming in the first two games of the season against the Tigers and undefeated ladder leaders PINT.

Usual standouts Billie Byers, Shakalia Gardiner-Dunn and Paula Pavic were standouts against the Tahs, while Ciaralii Parnell scored four goals.

The Saints will face their toughest test in a number of months, with the Tigers coming in refreshed from their post-break bye and with only one loss to their name.

Nightcliff have been a growing power for some time, but this may be their strongest year so far with plenty of players who can get the job done across the ground.

Cassie McWilliam leads the season’s goal count with 22 to her name while Lucy Northcott has hit a run of form with the boot too.

Then there’s their other weapons including youngster Tshinta Kendall and midfielders such as Gabrielle Deller.
