A Red Centre remote community has claimed the title of the Territory’s tidiest town – beating stiff competition from the Top End and beyond.

Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff), located 227km west of Alice Springs, was crowned the Territory’s tidiest town at an awards ceremony at the Hilton Doubletree in Alice Springs on Friday night.

“Traditional Owners and the residents of Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff) are very deserving of this award and I congratulate them on their success,” Keep Australia Beautiful Council NT chief executive Heimo Schober said.

“The community residents are actively engaged and committed to improving liveability and wellbeing, keeping Ikuntji proud and strong, making it a deserving stand-out community at this year’s awards.

“The community has a very strong culture of continuous improvement, community drive with active participation, which has led them to win the prestigious award.”

Ikuntji will now go on to represent the Territory at the Australia-wide tidy town awards, held in Beechworth Victoria.

But Ikuntji wasn’t the only winner on the night: Nhulunbuy in the Top End was crowned best large community; Mataranka was named best medium community; Nama was named best homeland; and the MacDonnell Regional Council was named best regional council.

Individual awards went to Jeff Finch from the West Daly Regional Council, who took home the “Champions of Change” cup, while Hayley Dodd was named young legend.

Four people – from the Top End to the southern border – took out NT Citizen awards for their regions.

From the MacDonnell region, it was former politician Alison Anderson and Kathleen Abbott, while Gerald Longmair from West Daly and Rick Ashley from East Arnhem Land also took out the award.
