THOUSANDS of racing fans from across the country flocked into the Darwin Turf Club for the 2022 edition of the Great Northern Darwin Cup.
Stunning fashion and quality racing was on show from the start of the biggest day of Territory racing.
Bright colours were the flavour of the day at the Fashions on the Field, as the best of Darwin fashion took to the stage at the Darwin Turf Club.
Beating a field of six other stunning final competitors was Bridget McCue, who brought her own dress at a Territory based op shop.
“I am honestly shaking, I didn’t think that I was in with a chance, but I’m absolutely stoked,” McCue said.
“I’m wearing a beautiful skirt and top that came from a second hand sale from Sweet Brew of all places.”
Last year’s third place getter Jamiee Bruggemann improved to second, beating Kimberlee Cockrem.
Fans cheered as Mister Monaro, from the stable of Mark Nyhan, swept in to win the opener easily over Gary Clarke’s Global Wonder.
Among them were the Foote and Gebing families, up from Victoria, who came to the Darwin Cup as part of their road trip around Australia.
Former bookmaker Ray Bain came along in his best Santa outfit, tipping the favourite Living
The Dream to take out the Darwin Cup.
There was even a proposal off the track, with Wes Clark proposing to girlfriend Victoria Manton- and she said yes!
