Dane Swan has revealed details of a gruesome hand injury suffered while on a night out in Sydney at the weekend.
The Collingwood champion said it was a self-inflicted wound and one of his most painful experiences after he went to seek help in emergency about 3am on Sunday.
He flew back to Melbourne with a sliced left hand that required 12 stitches.
“I hurt it and had to go to the emergency,” Swan told his Hump Day with Swanny and Friends podcast.
“I didn’t want to but my friend told me, ‘Dane I think that hand needs to be looked at’.
“I was having such a good time, I was like, no thanks.
“I went there and was waiting there for ages.
“It was well after midnight when all the fun stuff happens.
“It was taking forever, I had a flight in the morning.
“They looked at my hand and said they don’t know if they can stitch it up.
“I said, ‘Listen am I going to die if I get on this flight tomorrow?’.
“I said, ‘Patch it up and I’ll deal with it tomorrow’.”
Swan said he called the old Collingwood club doctor who stitched him up in a few hours at his home.
“I rang the old footy club doctor and this is the first real time I’ve needed a doctor since I finished,’’ he said.
“He said come over and I’ll stitch you up.
“His wife and his daughter were sitting there and I ruined his Sunday arvo, he set up a little thing in the lounge room and he stitched me up. I owe him a lot.
“I had a very good weekend up until about 3am. Gee, I felt sorry for myself flying home hungover and he had to stick needles into the open wound. Probably one of the more painful experiences of my life.”
Swan, who is left-handed, said he texted his partner, Taylor Wilson, who is in the US with their baby son, Tate. He was to play a game of footy in Darwin before joining them but will now fly over earlier.
He said he was feeling better ahead of the reopening of his venue The Albion in South Melbourne this weekend.
“I didn’t call her (Wilson) and sent her a message. I said don’t freak out. There was nothing untoward, no fights, it was self-inflicted. I’m positive I won’t be playing in Darwin so I’ll be over in a couple of weeks.”
Swan said he will likely stay in the US until February as they spend time with Wilson’s family.
