NT Police are warning Facebook users to be “very cautious”, after a new online scam emerged, in which a fake Facebook profile purporting to be a popular Darwin pub messages users to claim a “prize”.

The link leads to a website that requests users enter their credit card details “to verify your data”.

Darwin resident Agnes Bingham received a message from the fake profile, but was not fooled by attempted scam. She shared screenshots to a local crime watch group to warn others of the grift.

NT Detective Sergeant Craig Windebank from the Cybercrime Unit said online scams of this nature “are not uncommon”.

“People should be very cautious when clicking on links in emails as this can have undesirable consequences such as installing malware,” he said.

“The Cybercrime investigation unit has a number of similar matters that they are currently investigating and would encourage people who have been victims of online scams to report through www.cyber.gov.au.

Sergeant Windebank said anyone who comes across this kind of scam should report it to the Australia Cyber Security Centre, and keep on top of their online security by checking no malware has been installed on their device and ensuring they use unique and complex passwords.
