Australian women’s cricketers engage with next generation from the Northern Territory

Hundreds of Top End cricket fans and aspiring athletes got to meet their idols as the Australian Women’s cricket team made the trip to the NT as part of their World Cup preparations.
The women’s side made the trip to the Top End earlier this month to engage with the local community, culture and build their group togetherness ahead of the trip to India later this year.
The team is perhaps the most successful in Australian sporting history considering their win percentage and their visit was met with great support.
Well-known leaders in the group such as Alyssa Healy and Elyse Perry shared their stories and skills with the hundreds of Territory juniors at DXC Arena.
While they later made the trip out to Kakadu as part of a cultural visit, that Alana King said was hugely important to build group togetherness.
“It’s been incredible, our backyard is one of the most magnificent parts of the world so to get to explore, to get into culture and meet different communities has been a highlight,” King said.
“Those kids make you smile, they see new people and just want to get around you, to play some cricket with them, put smiles on their faces and make their day is a cool experience.
“For us being connected on the field is what we talk about but connected off the field is really important too, so to connect with our culture helps us create special bonds with each other.”
King said another highlight of the trip was the typical NT experience of seeing a crocodile in the flesh.
“It’s something I really wanted to see, we don’t get to see them a whole lot but to see a 5-6m croc was pretty intimidating,”
“But the main thing for me was getting back to community and always giving back, that’s always been a big part of who I am and to do it with the whole team is pretty special.
“We want to be committed in whatever we do, this is a little out of some people’s comfort zones in trying bush tucker or spear throwing.
“The more we can learn about our culture in our backyard will help us as a team whether it’s on field or off field in high pressure situations, the more connected we are the better we can be.”
