Two Territory footballers have earned selection to a national squad as Darwin and Football NT gears up to a host an Asian Cup qualifier, among the largest events to have been played in the Top End.
The Asian Cup Qualifier between Timor Leste and the Maldives for Saudi Arabia 2027 is one of the biggest football matches the NT has hosted and will be played at TRL Stadium in Marrara on June 10.
It comes off the back of the Australia Cup matches between A-League squads, which has become an annual part of the Territory football season.
Timor has selected two Casuarina Football Club players, Danilo De Lemos and Mark Casimiro, as part of their overall squad for the series adding to the Darwin connection.
The pair grew up playing for the Rowdies through the junior development system and are now key members of the men’s premier league squad.
“It was quite the shock to be called up for the national team,” De Lemos said.
“I’m very honoured for the opportunity and very happy with how I’ve been performing in the training camp.”
For Casimiro the opportunity to get recognised by his country after putting in all the hard work in Darwin was something he was proud of.
“I’m incredibly honoured and excited to represent Timor Leste, my country,” he said.
I’ve been working so hard in training and games over the years and now the opportunity has arrived I’m ready to give it my all.”
Football NT chief executive Jamie Monteith said the final round of qualifiers was a huge event and one of the biggest to ever come to Darwin.
“We are excited to host such an amazing event and to support our football community through these high-level footballing events,” Monteith said.
“We have just come off the back of an amazing couple of games, we witnessed Perth Glory, Wellington Phoenix, Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners play some electric football.
“We are asking all our footballing community to get behind this event and get ready for an exciting night of international football as Timor-Leste takes on the Maldives.
“This match marks a special moment in our football journey and offers fans a chance to witness international talent and the spirit of the beautiful game up close.”
“Bring your flags, wear your national colours, and join us for a night of football, culture, and community pride. Let’s fill the stadium and show our support for the national teams.”
