A popular Bellarine Peninsula annual swimming event has been cancelled for 2021 due to COVID-19.

Organisers of Indented Head open water swim Wreck2Reef were forced to pull the pin on its scheduled event last Saturday following the announcement of the statewide five-day lockdown.

The event, which was set to see more than 450 swimmers compete, was forced to cancel last minute.

Organisers have since announced that the 2021 event would not be rescheduled to a later date this year due to the uncertainty of COVID-19.

Wreck2Reef co-event director Andrew Dix said the Indented Head Yacht Club was “devastated” by the cancellation of its annual community fundraising event.

“Unlike most other swims this season, the Indented Head Yacht Club made the decision in December to proceed and this decision was widely supported by the Victorian swim community,” Mr Dix said.

“Up and until a week ago, all the effort appeared to have been well spent with over 450 swimmers registered and a forecast for perfect swimming conditions on the day.”

Mr Dix said that as a small, volunteer-only organisation, the “logistic, physical, and emotional effort” to run such an event was “very challenging”.

“Given the uncertain nature of COVID, and the lack of predictability of lockdown measures, the logistic issues around finding a new date for this year and in galvanising the members for their support in running it, the call to cancel for 2021 has been made.

The yacht club is looking at how to recompense swimmers.

Funds raised from this years’ event were earmarked to purchase a new training yacht to cope with the increased demand for the club’s learn to sail program.
