JULIE O’Shea will take the “how did the chicken cross the road” riddle to new lengths next month.

She will cross the Queensland border during a pandemic with to 700 hens, to rehome them.

But there’s one small issue. They may not all lay eggs.

“Egg or no egg these hens produce for you in one way or another and are an asset to any garden,” said Ms O’Shea, a self-confessed “crazy chicken lady”.

The founder of farm-hen rehoming charity Who Gives a Cluck is calling on “mother cluckers” (hen parents) willing to take on older laying hens to prevent them from being culled.

Her latest dispatch – which will come in at between 400 to 700 free range organic hens — will be ready for pick up on the Coast on August 15.

The Mullumbimby woman has successfully rehomed 1800 hens since she started the charity in 2017.

“What happens is once a hen reaches 18 months to two years old their egg laying drops by half and the profit is gone,” Ms O’Shea explained.

“Farmers can’t afford to keep the hens, and being layers they are skinny things — so they get culled.

“Instead I work to find them a good home, where they tend to lay every few days and produce great manure.

“They can see out their retirement in peace, with their friends.”

Those interested in adopting the hens can register at the Who Gives a Cluck website.

Hens are adopted for a $10 rehoming fee and all adoptees must provide proof of adequate space.
