St Joseph’s College Coomera: Fire destroys excavator at Gold Coast School

Police are investigating after a fire engulfed an excavator at a Gold Coast school construction site.

NORTHERN GOLD COAST locals are scratching their heads over a fire that engulfed a piece of machinery over the weekend.

At around 4pm Sunday afternoon police and three fire crews were called to a worksite at St Joseph’s College in Coomera after thick plumes of smoke were spotted.

According to fireys an excavator that had been parked at the project was in flames when they arrived.

No one was operating the vehicle, which was turned off at the time.

Locals at the scene told the Bulletin that the volunteer fire crew in the area was the first to arrive.

Police forensic units were deployed to the site shortly after the fire was put out at around 5pm.

Investigations are ongoing, and the vehicle was completely destroyed.

The school did not comment on the matter.

A group of Gold Coast prep students has been left devastated after its primary school and playground was hit by vandals for the fifth time this year.

Bellevue Park State School, located in Ashmore off Benowa Road, was hit by severe graffiti damage and fire at the weekend – resulting in another major clean up effort.

Every one of the school’s buildings, including those which had recently been renovated, had been hit.

A fortnight ago the skylights of the school were broken, costing more than $5000 to repair.

“The preppies were really sad, as their whole prep village had been sprayed,” a staff member said.

“Staff did their best cleaning it in the early hours of the morning so the children didn’t have to deal with the awful language, which was the one good thing.

“Out students love the leafy green campus, it is a place of pride for them, so this is thoughtless.”

The staff member believed the attacks were happening because the school was easy to access, through the Benowa netball fields.

Bellevue Park principal Rachel Cutajar is working with Education Queensland and the Gold Coast City Council on establishing a fence perimeter for the school.

Police are investigating the attacks and security patrols have been increased.

A spokesman for the Department of Education asked the community to report any suspicious activity to police or contact the School Watch hotline 13 17 88.
