HACKERS were not responsible for Health Minister Greg Hunt’s Twitter account “liking” a porn tweet, an Australian Federal Police investigation has confirmed.
The Minister asked the AFP to investigate the suspected hack after his account “liked” the explicit tweet at 5.01am on December 10 last year.
After an almost six month investigation, AFP commissioner Andrew Colvin confirmed today hackers were not responsible.
“The account was not hacked in a criminal sense,” the Commissioner told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra.
He also issued a warning that “social media hygiene” was an issue all Australians needed to be “very conscious of”.
“That is about who has access to your Twitter account, how many people have access to your Twitter account, do you know who has access to your account,” he said.
An AFP official confirmed the police had approached Twitter for information about the incident.
Documents obtained by BuzzFeed News show the AFP considered the investigation an “essential” priority and it assigned between two and five officers to the case.
The AFP has not yet initiated an investigation into a suspected hack of Australian Ambassador to the US Joe Hockey’s account, which “liked” a tweet which described Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as a “cranky prick” in December.
In November, front Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne also claimed his Twitter account had been hacked after it ‘liked’ a gay porn tweet at 2am on a Thursday morning.
Despite calls from Conservative Party Senator Cory Bernardi for a full investigation and report, Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese later confirmed his party would not support such a move.
