A SPIKE in Tasmania’s road toll has prompted the government to launch an advertising blitz to promote safety messages.
Twenty-seven lives have been lost on Tasmanian roads this year, compared to 21 at the same time 12 months ago.
The state government has increased road safety awareness advertising by 40 per cent in September, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Michael Ferguson said.
Mr Ferguson said a new campaign against drink-driving targeted at young drivers would also be launched next month and an anti-mobile phone use program would be released this year.
“These advertisements and additional funding complement the current road safety public education campaigns,’’ he said.
Mr Ferguson said in addition, 19 new projects had been announced under a government program to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and I urge Tasmanians to look after themselves and each other as we get out and explore our state and support Tasmanian businesses through our COVID-19 recovery,’’ he said.
