Darwin council’s access and inclusion budget will see a $20,311 redevelopment of Jingili playground’s amenities while new inclusive swings at a cost of $12,000 will help families with children enjoy the outdoors.

Helping People Achieve chief executive Tony Burns said providing equipment for children living with disabilities to enjoy was essential for their wellbeing.

“These families live with these circumstances 24 hours a day,” he said.

“To be able to get out, have respite, enjoy life and be part of the community is vital and so important for their wellbeing.

“Just seeing people smile and have a good time is really important.”

Nightcliff’s Sunset park has been proposed as one which could receive new accessible swings and play equipment.

The committee will also see a $3500 audit of Mindil Beach and how it could be improved to provide better access while also protecting sacred sites from damage.

Mr Burns said improving Mindil Beach as one of Darwin’s major attractions would help it stand out as an inclusive event and could attract more people to Darwin.

“Mindil is so important, we have one of the best sunsets in the world and reality is a person in a wheelchair isn’t able to go to the beach looking at this,” he said. “To allow a wheelchair to go down to the beach and someone to enjoy it like anyone else, these opportunities are so important.

“Giving everyone the same rights and inclusion and to experience things like the markets like everyone else is so important.”

Previous work from council’s $55,000 access and inclusion budget has seen access works organised for Boulter and Crerar Rds and upgrades to accessible parking bays in the CBD.

Final approval will be decided on by elected members at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
