Rural cabin stays planned for Torquay

Victoria's COVID free streak has ended

An “alternative” accommodation option providing a rural experience away from the coast could soon be headed to Torquay under plans submitted to council.

Owners of a 3ha property on Ashmore Road in Torquay have applied for a planning permit from the Surf Coast Shire to construct three self-contained cabins to provide a short-term holiday option for visitors.

Each cabin will feature one or two bedrooms with a shared bathroom and toilet, along with an open plan kitchen and living area with direct access to an outdoor patio.

The property owners will also live permanently in a separate dwelling on the site to provide a point of contact for guests and to ensure “inappropriate behaviour” is minimised.

They will also be able to ensure any response required for emergency events can be managed in a “timely and efficient manner”.

“The group accommodation will be co-located on the subject land, with the proponent’s permanent residence so patrons will always be able to access local knowledge and respond appropriately to a fire threat,” the planning report reads.

The planning report highlights that the $600,000 proposal was unique as it differs from other options within proximity to activity centres and the coastal foreshore.

“The development of group accommodation on the subject land provides an alternative accommodation option to other traditional venues located in Torquay and Jan Juc,” it said.

The report notes that although located in a bush setting, the surrounding area is well established and has extensive cleared areas, which limits the amount of fuel available for fire.

“As a result it is likely that any fire threatening the property will have been tracked for some time and patrons will have ample warning to evacuate, in keeping with the ‘leave early’ policy currently in place in Victoria,” it said.

Council is not set to make a decision on the proposal until at least January 25.
