With a near full house expected at the ‘G’ on Saturday evening for the Cats’ preliminary final, Geelong commuters are being assured extra public transport services will be able to get them there.

Additional Geelong line services will be put on for footy fans before and after the game against the Lions.

Three additional services will depart Waurn Ponds between 11am and 2.30pm, while another three extra services will also depart from Southern Cross between 8.45pm and 9.30pm.

These services will run in addition to regular Geelong line services, which operate approximately every 40 minutes on Saturday.

V/Line executive director of operations, Rochelle Reynolds, encouraged passengers to “plan their journey in advance.”

“We’re putting on extra services before and after the game so footy fans have more options travelling to and from Melbourne. It will be busy.”

Minister for public and active transport, Gabrielle Williams, said the government’s regional fare cap makes it easier to head to the footy.

“With a big crowd expected to fill the MCG, we are putting on more train services for Geelong fans to get along to Saturday night’s blockbuster preliminary final,” Ms Williams said.

The regional fare cap and weekend daily cap means passengers pay $7.20 full fare and $3.60 concession to get to the MCG and home again for same day travel.

Fans can travel between Southern Cross Station and the MCG on a Metro Trains service to either Jolimont or Richmond stations.
