Portarlington suppliers call on community to snap up abundance of mussels

Hundreds of kilograms of the “biggest and best” mussels are available in Portarlington, with suppliers calling on people to eat up the supplies that would have starred at the annual mussel festival.

Victoria's COVID free streak has ended

Hundreds of kilograms of the “biggest and best” mussels are available to buy in Portarlington, with traders calling on locals and tourists to eat up their supplies.

The abundance of mussels follows the cancellation of this year’s Portarlington Mussel Festival, which would have been held this Saturday, but was called off in June due to COVID-19.

Festival director Sheryl Follett said this summer had seen “certainly one of the best harvests in many years”.

“One of the things that the mussel outlets and people on our committee are saying is that this is the best year for mussels they’ve had in a long time,” Ms Follett said.

“We’ve got the biggest and best mussels – it has been a bumper season.

“They’re extra good this year – if you’ve never tried mussels, this year is a good time to give them a go.”

Ms Follett said there were “plenty” of mussels available across numerous outlets in Portarlington, including at the pier.

Last year’s mussel festival saw more than 20,000 visitors come through the gates and raise $32,000 for local community organisations.

Organisers announced in June with “deep regret and heavy hearts” that the January 2021 event would not go ahead.

Ms Follett said an early call would also need to be made for the 2022 event but she was “hopeful” that it would go ahead.
