As of 10.30am on Friday morning more than $97,000 had already been spent.

The pool, which was opened at 12.01am on Wednesday morning, was the second with a 48-hour turnaround time for vouchers, with hopes of slowing the spend and allowing more businesses and shoppers to benefit from the scheme.

The fifth round of the program was exhausted after four-and-a-half days meaning shoppers will probably need to get their spend in before midday on Sunday to ensure they get a slice of the action.

The fifth and sixth round were also the first two rounds funded directly from Darwin council’s car parking revenue, which ordinarily would provide free parking in the Darwin CBD over the Christmas period.

Council’s fifth round proved to be the second most successful with more than $1.2 million being spent, which equated to a turnover of $6.10 for every dollar of the $200,000 investment.

The program has been funded from the Northern Territory Government and Darwin council, which contributed $200,000 to Darwin’s fifth and sixth round of the program.
