Thunderstorms could also form in the northwest today, with between 10mm to as much as 50mm expected in isolated areas over the coming days.

Darwin records highest rainfall for September in almost 40 years

With a wet Friday and weekend also forecast for western parts, Darwin is set for showers and thunderstorms over the next few days.

As the showers and thunderstorms increase, daytime temperatures will drop a couple of degrees over the next few days.

A return to hotter and drier conditions is expected across much of the Top End early next week from Sunday.

The storms are also likely to move to the eastern Top End from Thursday including through Katherine, with 5 to 20 mm of rain forecast for the broader region.

The rain forecast for Katherine is in addition to the 5mm that fell there on Tuesday morning, with even more recorded in nearby rural areas.

The average rainfall for the Katherine area in September is 5-10mm.

As the system moves across the Territory, Alice Springs and Yulara are expected to get a look in with thunderstorms and smaller falls of 1 to 5 mm expected.

Near-record inland Top End temperatures were reached on Wednesday, with Jabiru recording 39.4C, Tindal reaching 38.9C and Delamere Weapons Range reaching 38.9°C.

These temperatures were around 3C hotter than September averages.
