With dance schools closed due to lockdown, Geelong students have been impressively reconverting living rooms, garage spaces and even backyards into home studios to keep training.

Life with coronavirus through the eyes of a child

With dance schools closed due to lockdown, Geelong students are reconverting living rooms, garage spaces and even backyards into home studios to keep training.

Wandana Heights mum Kerrie Hutchinson has transformed her families living room into a makeshift dance studio for her 11-year-old daughter Sophie.

Ms Hutchinson said she set up the home studio during the previous COVID-19 restrictions and has now replicated a similar space for the recent five-day lockdown.

“Once we knew this was upon us again we decided to emulate what we did last time to help keep a sense of normality,” she said.

“Sophie needs a lot of room to flip around the place and jump about.

“We moved the couches to the outer walls, made sure the flooring was safe, and moved any other obstacles out of the way and then it was good to go.”

Sophie, who attends Karen Feldman Dance “eats, breathes and lives dance,” said Ms Hutchinson.

“It’s what gets her out of bed in the morning and helps her sleep at night,” she said.

“It’s her outlet – it’s her happy place. Especially with not being able to see friends, being able to continue on with the work she did in class is super important.

“We put the dance videos up on the big screen, it’s like she can enjoy the class almost as if she was there.”

Ms Hutchinson said other parents have also found creative ways to keep their children dancing throughout lockdown.

“There’s been lots of spare rooms, garages, and backyards even converted into dance studios.”
