SURFERS Paradise is the city’s economic deadspot, with a sluggish business recovery in the post-COVID world.
The latest wage payroll data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics released Wednesday shows that jobs in the latest reporting period (November 28) were still down by 6.3 per cent from March 2020, among the worst hit in the state.
The jobs drop in Surfers Paradise was only surpassed by Outback Queensland at 6.5 per cent and Caboolture Hinterland at 10.6 per cent.
Broadbeach–Burleigh were the second hardest hit with a 4.7 per cent change in the number of jobs.
Mudgeeraba-Tallebudgera and Nerang have weathered the storm best with an overall drop of 3.3 per cent of jobs.
The toughest month for the city was April 2020 when the region’s job rate dropped an average 11.25 per cent.

The unemployment rate across the city is 6.8 per cent, with 23,600 job seekers.
As of November, Surfers Paradise had 2418 job seekers, the highest in the city.
It was followed by Labrador with 1952 and Upper Coomera with 1749.
Clear Island Waters had the fewest number of people looking for work, with just 162 on the payroll in the most recent count.
