Lobby group GetUp is preparing to attempt to unseat Liberal MP Nicolle Flint from the marginal South Australian seat of Boothby, in its nationwide campaign against right-faction Liberal MPs.
At least 300 GetUp members are expected to attend a recruitment drive tonight at The Gov, in the neighbouring electorate of Adelaide.
There, members will be informed of the lobby group’s federal election strategy and a plan to oust Ms Flint which will include a barrage of “persuasive” phone calls to voters in the state’s most marginal seat.
It follows a survey of GetUp members, where almost 1000 people voted that Ms Flint was among hard-right Liberals holding the nation back on climate action, sufficient funding for the ABC, and who were keeping refugees locked up on Manus and Nauru islands.
GetUp election director Henny Smith said meetings have also been held in Brisbane to target Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, in Sydney to oust former Prime Minister Tony Abbott as well as Victorian backbencher Kevin Andrews.
“Members are going to be … speaking to people about how members of this hard-right faction are stopping progress on all the issues that we care about,” Ms Smith said.
“Climate change is coming up as a really important issue to the electorate.”
Boothby MP Nicolle Flint said the meeting was further evidence that GetUp was a left-wing front for Labor and the Greens.
“I stand on my record of delivering for my community on a wide-range of issues like fixing Oaklands Crossing, reactivating the Repat and upgrading local sports clubs like the Blackwood Footy Club,” Ms Flint said.
“I’ve worked incredibly hard on women’s health issues like endometriosis and the terrible tragedy of stillbirth and have secured initial funding to begin to address decades of neglect of these issues.
“Thanks to our strong economic management our government can afford to fund projects like these, as well as guarantee essential services like health and education.”
