GEELONG council has unveiled dozens of community projects that will share in $3 million worth of infrastructure grants, with five sports clubs snapping up more than half of the funding.
The City of Greater Geelong council last week approved $3 million in funding for 49 community-led projects through its 2020-21 Community Infrastructure Grants program, publicly announcing the grants on Wednesday.
Four projects were awarded the maximum grant amounts of $350,000, including:
Barwon Valley Golf Club’s clubroom upgrade and refurbishment of the 18-hole Belmont course.
Geelong Rangers Soccer Club’s lighting upgrade and expansion at Myers Reserve in Bell Post Hill.
Norlane Bowling Club’s installation of a synthetic bowling green.
St Joseph’s Cricket Club’s Carey Oval pavilion upgrade.
Other major grants included $348,000 for a lighting system upgrade project at the Bell Park Sports Club and $140,973 for a sealed car park upgrade at the Geelong Bridge Club.
“Our local groups are the backbone of our rich community life and provide the activities and social connections that are vital to the health and wellbeing of our residents,” Mayor Stephanie Asher said.
“The grants program helps make both large and small expansion and improvement projects a reality and supports the ongoing viability of a diverse range of community groups.”
More than half of the grants will be used to support capital works ventures, while 21 will be used to progress planning on community-led projects.
The city this week remained tight-lipped on four projects worth $225,700, only revealing details of 45 grants.
Other funded projects include $60,241 for a solar hot water system at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, $50,000 for the Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs to assist with planning to replace infrastructure for a fly casting pool, and $50,000 for a facility development plan for the East Geelong Golf Club.
