CONSULTATION for Darwin council’s $25 million Casuarina Pool upgrades will begin with major stakeholders today, with the hopes of shaping it into a family friendly “destination” in Darwin’s northern suburbs.

Council swiftly moved the plans from their confidential section into their open section at last night’s council meeting, just hours after Palmerston council unveiled their own plans for the Palmerston Aquatic Centre’s upgrades.

But Richardson Ward alderman Rebecca Want De Rowe said the pool had been screaming for upgrades for years.

“This has been something us aldermen have been lobbying for many years … to see council finally get behind it and put the money back into the northern suburbs is something we’re very excited about,” Ms Want De Rowe said.

“It’s not just going to be a pool, it’s going to be a destination for the northern suburbs.”

The upgraded pool is set to include a number of new facilities including a resort-style lagoon, swimming pool and learn to swim pools, wet and dry play areas, fitness equipment, picnic and barbecue facilities and room to co-locate a restaurant or cafe and allied health services, in a shaded and tropical setting.

While a number of further upgrades were suggested at last night’s meeting, alderman Jimmy Bouhoris said it was important to listen to both the architects who knew what they were doing and the community who would give guidance regarding the facility they wanted.

“It’s a 43-year-old pool and it needs upgrades,” he said.

“We do need this and it is being done by the professionals.”

Consultation with the wider community will begin on September 28 and is set to take about five weeks, with council hopeful construction will begin on the upgrades within 12 months.
