An exclusive Newspoll conducted for The Australian confirms that Labor is leading the Coalition 53-47 on a two-party-preferred basis.

Covid-stricken Anthony Albanese is still enjoying a comfortable election lead against Scott Morrison despite spending three days locked up in Marrickville with his dog Toto.

An exclusive Newspoll conducted for The Australian confirms that Labor is leading the Coalition 53-47 on a two-party-preferred basis.

The result is unchanged from the last two Newspolls conducted since the election was called.

While the latest political research was conducted from Wednesday to Saturday - capturing the views of voters both before and after his diagnosis - the results suggest there’s no impact from the Labor leader disappearing from the frontline to date.

The Prime Minister has extended his lead over Anthony Albanese as the preferred prime minister, according to Newspoll.

The Prime Minister’s support on this question recorded a two-point rise to 46 per cent compared with Mr Albanese unchanged on 37 per cent.

That’s similar to the gap before Scott Morrison staged his “miracle” election win in 2019. However, it’s not the measure that decides the election.

But in the measures that are pivotal - the primary vote and the two party-preferred result when preferences are distributed - Labor remains in the lead.

The Newspoll survey period is the first since Sky News’ People’s Forum last week which the audience told pollsters was a narrow victory for the Labor leader.

In some promising news for Scott Morrison, the poll shows popular support for the Coalition - the primary vote - lifting a point to 36 per cent.

But there’s good news for Labor too that has recovered ground to secure a primary vote of 37 per cent. In polling terms there’s not much in either result which is in practical terms steady.

Support for the Greens fell by one point to 11 per cent and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation also fell by one point to 3 per cent.

Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party remained steady at 4 per cent.

Mr Morrison’s approval fell a point to 42 per cent while dissatisfaction with his performance rose two points to 54 per cent.

The Newspoll results were published on Monday night as a new IPSOS poll for The Australian Financial Review also finds that the Coalition is struggling to make ground despite the Labor leader’s patchy campaigning in the first fortnight.

The poll has found 42 per cent of voters believe Labor will win and only one in three voters believe the Coalition will win another term.

The IPSOS poll finds both the major parties are struggling with low primary voters of 34 per cent of Labor and 32 per cent for the Coalition.

Based on preference flows at the last election, Labor is on 50 per cent on a two party preferred basis, the Coalition on 42 per cent and 8 per cent of voters are undecided - suggesting the prospect of a surprise victory for Scott Morrison remains a real possibility
