CCTV FOOTAGE: Man arrested over Gold Coast mailbox raids after ‘relentless’ Broadbeach tower thefts

A man has been arrested after residents of a Gold Coast tower were hit by “relentless” mailbox thefts. SEE THE VIDEO

A GOLD Coast tower’s community hit repeatedly by postbox pirates are tearing their hair out as the “relentless” thefts continue.

The unit tower on Surf Parade, Broadbeach has had its letterboxes raided at least three times by three different individuals in the last month – and they aren’t stopping.

Despite the thieves all being caught on camera the nightly raids have not let up. The latest was on New Year's Eve.

Alleged mail thieves have been caught on camera at a Broadbeach tower numerous times in the past few months. The man pictured was arrested by police and will face court later this month.

A spokesman for the body corporate committee said the thefts were “relentless”.

“We only recently installed cameras last year, but since then we could see the extent of it, every few weeks it happens.

“Every man and his dog has a go, we have had people use a master key to open letter boxes, others use their hands.

“There were just more and more towards Christmas.”

“We are doing all we can but it doesn’t stop.

“There are obviously worries about identity theft and just theft in general – they take everything except the bills.”

A third alleged mail thief hit the letterboxes at the Broadbeach tower on New Years eve.

The committee are not considering alternative mail drop options.

Police did however charge one of the three individuals caught on camera at the building in the past month with mail theft.

A 35-year-old was remanded in custody to reappear on January 19. It will be alleged that at around 4am on December 2, numerous mailboxes were entered, 10 were damaged and a quantity of mail was stolen.

He was also charged with possession of a dangerous drug, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed and disqualified driving and two stealing counts, unrelated to the mail theft incident.

A number of similar festive season parcel theft incidents have been occurring across the Northern Gold Coast in recent months.
