Parcel snatching fears on the Gold Coast

COMPLAINTS of parcel theft are exploding across the Gold Coast ahead of the festive season after multiple reports of a “thief” following postie vans doing deliveries.

In the city’s north residents have reported a car trailing a postal van and nabbing parcels as soon as they have been dropped off at homes.

A Pacific Pines woman believes she caught an attempted robbery similar to the reports circling on social media on camera Tuesday.

“I was working from home and expecting a delivery, we heard a light knock at the door and that was it even though it was meant to be signed for,” she said.

“My daughter went out and saw a white car that had been pulled up out front take off as soon as they saw her.

“As soon as we watched the footage we could see they were following the postie van. It really seemed very suss.

“They were clearly following the postal truck, as my daughter opened the door the left.

She said she was frustrated that the package was not hidden given it was one that had to be signed for.

“If my daughter wasn’t out the door as soon as they called out I have no doubt we would have lost about $500 worth of items in that package.

“I have seem similar things around the last few months, these are people who work hard for their stuff only to see it disappear.”

She reported the matter to Australia Post.

The same day a Coomera resident shared a similar experience to the Neighbourhood Watch page online to warn others in the area.

“I just had my parcel delivered without needing signature. I was home,” they wrote.

“To avoid my dogs barging out through the front door and possibly attack the postman, I decided to go around through the garage.

“The postman just left, but when I got to my front door, someone was already there ready to pick up my package. Startled he ran and jumped into this white SUV with someone else driving then sped away.

“Unfortunately I didn’t get the number plate and the model of the car. Happened so quick. My best bet is they have been following the courier van and make sure no one answers the door and hoping the package would be left unattended.”

Queensland Police said they had no reports of incidents at this stage but a police spokesman warned: “As the holiday season approaches it is important for people to take precautionary measures to ensure their mail and parcels are protected.

“It’s also worth considering whether the parcel can be delivered to a local post office, your work location, or if it is possible to click-and-collect.”

An Australian Post spokesman said its delivery people receive regular security training and are encouraged to always be vigilant of their surroundings and not to deliver if they believe they are being followed and cannot complete the delivery safely.

“Mail that is tampered with or goes missing from a resident’s property after delivery is considered a criminal matter, and customers should immediately report the theft to the police,” they said.

Delivery protocols for some parcels had changed due to coronavirus.

Now when a signature would normally be required, the customer must just be present, otherwise standard delivery procedures would apply.
