After Robin Knox made an impromptu attempt to ban the RSL from making any future proposals on the Cenotaph carpark site, Mick Palmer said council was contradicting itself in calling for good governance and then behaving the way they were.

“I can’t see how in terms of good governance how we have members here who week in, week out ask for good governance,” he said.

“Bringing in late amendments that haven’t been circulated at the last minute … I should have had notice about this on Friday.”

Alderman Emma Young also said elected members needed to step back and think about how they were making decisions in council.

“I think we need to stop policy on the run,” she said.

“It doesn’t work in our favour, it looks bad and it’s not good governance.”

Earlier, alderman Simon Niblock tried to correct the minutes from a previous meeting, maintaining he hadn’t been given the opportunity to vote in a controversial decision regarding the Darwin RSL proposal a month ago.

“At a previous meeting where we adopted the minutes … there was concern or question over whether a vote had taken place,” he said.

“The online minutes indicate it was 13-nil. I think that needs to be amended.”

But Darwin chief executive Scott Waters denied the correction, saying the majority of council had accepted the minutes.
