THE company behind liquor giant Dan Murphy’s has welcomed the Government’s plan to force the hand of the Director of Liquor Licensing into a decision.

The NT News last night revealed that the Government would look to introduce a bill that would force a decision to be made within 30 days.

The Dan Murphy’s saga is set to drag into its 5th year, if no decision is made before December 31, and has divided the community.

Endeavour Group corporate services general manager Shane Tremble said, while he had not seen the bill, he welcomed the news.

“We are yet to see the bill itself or any details around it, but we welcome any steps that would bring this lengthy application process to a conclusion,” Mr Tremble said.

“We have been, and continue to engage with local communities, to listen to and address any concerns they may have and incorporate them as part of our Responsible Service of Alcohol Management Plan and if approved, the Darwin Dan Murphy’s would have the most stringent set of alcohol control policies anywhere in the country.”

The decision to introduce the Bill however has been slammed by advocacy groups including the NT Council of Social Services as the proposed location is close to three dry Aboriginal communities.

NTCOSS chief executive Deborah Di Natale said Darwin did not need one of the largest bottle shops in the country.
