James Courtney reflects on his career to date

KEEP your eyes peeled when out on the road - Australia’s best Supercar drivers have arrived and checked in to the Gold Coast.

‘IT’S GOOD TO BE BACK’: Catch the interview with Supercars young gun in the weekend Bulletin.

It was announced Wednesday morning more than 200 Supercars team personnel, broadcasters and drivers have temporarily relocated to the city due to Victoria going into lockdown.

Some of the best drivers from Jack Le Brocq, Cam Waters and Lee Holdsworth will be staying in houses and apartments at Sea World, Yatala and Norwell.

But no one is more thrilled to have other than Gold Coast based and Ford Mustang driver James Courtney.

“I’ve been telling them (the team) for years they should relocate here (and) now they will get a little taste of it,” he said.

“The guys are quite used to working on the road, adjusting and adapting to changing conditions. That’s what our sport is all about.

“As for the way we go racing, I won’t have to do Skype meetings so it will be nice to be able to sit down face to face with the guys and spend some good quality time with them.

“Since singing with the team (Tickford Racing) I haven’t been able to spend too much time with them due to border restrictions and all the lockdowns.

“It’s going to be good to get to know them better and sit and have some cold beers with them and enjoy the beautiful weather hopefully coming in the next couple of days.

“We have so much to offer here and it’s good for us to take the guys around and show them.”

Tourism minister Kate Jones said having the Supercar drivers in the city as well as Melbourne AFL teams and Super Netball teams across the state would deliver “hundreds of thousands” to the economy.

“What’s better than being a professional motor car driver than being a professional motor car driver that lives at Sea World? This is every little child’s dream.

“The Supercars have a very proud relationship with the City of Gold Coast and have had for years.

“It’s so wonderful we can roll out the red carpet and welcome their (Supercar) drivers from Victoria here on the Gold Coast for the next fortnight.

“All the appropriate quarantine measures have been put in place with the COVID-Safe plan Supercars developed some months ago. And we will continue to work with them to ensure racing can continue.”

The GC600 motorsport carnival 2020 - planned to be held from October 30 to November 1 -event was cancelled in May due to the pandemic. It would have been the event’s 30th year.

With the Supercars crew in town we’ve had some fun nominating five places off the beaten track that they should visit:

See Australia’s most successful border blockade. Yes, the wait times can be a tad long, but what better way to learn all about the inside of a Supercar while also building patience skills.

Visit Johnny Depp’s one-time holiday house. While Mick Doohan may not be so forgiving about the state of his mansion after the movie star lived there while filming Pirates of the Caribbean, but we reckon it’s a must-see. ***Suggest taking your own clean linen.

Have a hit with Bernard Tomic. See whose engine is bigger – your Supercar or the tennis star’s Lamborghini – before taking to the court ... and maybe a nightspot afterwards.

Enjoy a three-hour scenic trip on the M1 at peak hour. ***Premium package includes the chance to experience our infamous light rail.

Experience a real-life WWE-style melee. Eighteen bikies were arrested for an infamous 2013 brawl on Surf Parade at Broadbeach, so play your cards right and you may get front-row seats to a repeat.
