Aussie woman dead after Bali dive trip named

Police have identified an Australian woman who died after collapsing during a weekend dive with her husband in Bali.

An Australian woman who died while on a group dive in Bali has been identified by police as 67-year-old Pamela Phillips from Victoria.

Klungkung police spokesperson Agus Widiono said the incident occurred about 10am on Saturday (Bali time), shortly after the woman and her husband had joined a dive group on the island of Nusa Penida.

About eight minutes into the dive, he said the woman surfaced followed by a dive guide.
Mr Widiono said the woman reported that she was finding it “hard to breathe”.

She returned to the boat where she collapsed.

He said the boat crew immediately started CPR and the woman was rushed to the Nusa Medica Clinic, however she could not be revived.

Mr Widiono said all divers in the group had received a briefing and double-checked their equipment before heading out on the boat. He said police had already spoken to several witnesses.

Mrs Phillips’ husband, Linden, did not give approval for an autopsy in Bali, police said.

Instead, he told police the autopsy would be held in Australia.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said DFAT was “providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Bali”.

“We send our deepest condolences to their family and friends at this difficult time,” she said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”

The tragedy came just a day after another Australian was killed in a horrific high-speed motorbike crash in Bali.

The NSW man was riding in the Buleleng regency on Friday when he lost control after rounding a curve in one of the island’s northern provinces.

The victim has been identified as Thomas James Cossins, 30.

Head of Traffic Unit of Buleleng Police, AKP Bachtiar Arifin, said police were still investigating the incident.

Jasmine Sparreboom, Mr Cousins’ fiance, posted a tribute to him on Facebook.

“A tribute to the love of my life, my soulmate, my fiance my best friend,” Ms Sparreboom said.

“Thomas, you have shown me real love, real compassion, strength and loyalty.

“You shine brighter than anyone I have ever met and I will forever be in your debt. You’ve shown me love I never knew existed and I will truly love you for the rest of my life.

“I will never forget you and I will do everything in my power to honour your brilliance. Fly high with your beautiful Mum-ma. 21/09/1993-30/08/2024. My soulmate, my sweet angel.”
