A $134 million contract to expand Barwon Prison, which houses some of the state’s most notorious criminals, has been signed.
The expansion will be completed by construction firm Hansen Yuncken and will see the prison's capacity rise to 706 including more maximum-security beds.
The work that will add 196 beds to the prison at Anakie is due to be complete by 2022.
Capacity at five of the state’s prison will be boosted by 2023 inmates under a $798 million spend by the state government.
Corrections Minister Natalie Hutchins said: “We are investing in key infrastructure to keep staff and the community safe, as well as boosting prison programs and investing in education and skill development.”
Lara MP John Eren said: “As well as ensuring Barwon Prison continues to be safe and secure, this project is delivering a great boost to our local economy by creating 140 jobs during construction.”
The project is expected to target local employment and help from social enterprises, and offer jobs to disadvantaged Victorians.
