Dark Mofo has unveiled another slew of new events for their festival this June, with Covid-related density and capacity restrictions being eased.

DarkLab Music Director Kimberley Galceran said they were pulling out all the stops for this fortnight of non-stop partying.

“These additional shows represent some great Australian and Tasmanian artists that we’re excited to host,” Ms Galceran said.

“For those who missed out on tickets to the second week, there are now more opportunities in the festival’s first week to catch a gig and then club all night,” she said.

One of the new highlights will be a musical score by Dean Stevenson dedicated to the people of Ukraine on June 21.

Dark Mofo will give $10,000 of proceeds from this performance to Voices of Children, a charity providing support assistance to Ukrainian children and families affected by the Russian invasion.

Other acts added to the line-up include a “Neo-Kawaii” Japanese quartet, a “double-level queer” dance party, and a three-day weekend of “gluttony and unbridled pleasure” in the Hanging Gardens.

“The whole festival kicks off with Briggs & Emma Donovan and the Putbacks in the Odeon on Wednesday 8th, following Reclamation Walk,”

It follows the initial drop of over 100 artists from 30 countries including Australian turned global superstar The kid Laroi.

Dark Mofo runs from June 8 to June 22, with tickets going on sale from today (May 20) at full details can be found at darkmofo.net.au.

Latest additions

• THE festival’s opening night Reclamation Walk after party shows will feature a double bill of Yorta Yorta hip-hop star Briggs and acclaimed indigenous funk and soul tour de force Emma Donovan & The Putbacks at the Odeon Theatre on June 8.
• It will be followed that night by The Gathering at DarkLab’s inner-city cultural precinct, In The Hanging Garden, which will feature Jalen Sutcliffe, Rob Braslin, Dougie Mansell, and MADELENA.
• On June 12 Japanese quartet Chai will bring their euphoric brand of Neo-Kawaii, shattering archaic notions of cuteness, gender and rock.
• They’ll be joined on this Altar bill by locals Mum and Dad, summoning a tongue-in-cheek take on the spirit of golden era hip-hop.
• Club Mince is a double-level queer dance party extravaganza that will be hosted by House of Mince + NASTY, with a wild line-up of DJ talent and queer performance on June 10.
• Over the long weekend The Hanging Garden will play host to a three-night dance party titled Night Garden, in an extra-special long weekend of gluttony and unbridled pleasure, smattered with DJs, dance and Dark Mofo energy.

• On June 21 musician and resident composer at Mona, Dean Stevenson will perform a special concert with his Arco Set Orchestra, titled With Ukraine, at the Odeon Theatre.
• Dark Mofo will commit $10,000 of proceeds from this performance to Voices of Children, a charity providing support assistance to Ukrainian children and families affected by the Russian invasion.
• Combined with the proceeds of Dark Mofo’s Chernobyl score performances, the festival will donate more than $110,000 for the people of Ukraine.
• Hard-hitting Butchulla rapper Birdz joins a first week double-bill with pakana artist DENNI, bringing her soulful synth-driven hip-hop take to the Altar stage on June 11.
• Dynamic sonic experiment Shady Nasty draws from alternate forms of hip-hop and punk to perform a uniquely biting sound. They’ll be joined on this bill at Altar by local maximum voltage garage punks 208L Containers and the blistering thrashcore punk of Threats on June 9.
• Performing live from his installation space at the Museum of Old and New Art, Ben Salter will present Import Export: The Dark Sessions—a cross section of Tasmanian talent throughout the festival.
• The Museum of Old and New Art will also deliver a great big Saturday night of art, music and fire, with Mona Up Late during Dark Mofo.
• The museum will be hosting three new exhibitions after dark by Fiona Hall and AJ King, Jeremy Shaw, and Robert Andrew on June 11. Museum entry and Ferry bookings are required.
