A Gold Coast man police allege attacked a trio of men at a unit block, including by shooting a 21-year-old twice in the gut, has been released from hospital and transported to a correctional centre, a court has heard.
Surfers Paradise man Mitchell Norman Barnes, 30, was arrested on the afternoon of April 2, two-and-a-half days after police allege he was involved in a dispute with neighbours at a Peninsular Drive unit complex, leaving three men from the same family in hospital, two in critical condition.
Mr Barnes is charged with two counts of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, dangerous conduct with a weapon, unlawful possession of a category H firearm used to commit an indictable offence, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, and possessing used drug utensils.
His matter was twice listed in Southport Magistrates Court last week, but adjourned on both occasions as the defendant was in Gold Coast University Hospital receiving treatment.
Video of Mr Barnes’ arrest at Carrara released by Queensland Police appeared to show the defendant’s head swaddled in bandages as he climbed into the divisional van.
In court on Tuesday, defence lawyer Samuel Bowen told the court Mr Barnes had been released from the hospital as of Monday night, and transferred to a correctional centre.
No application for bail was made.
The charges were adjourned to April 15.
An online fundraiser to support the three allegedly injured men, Logan Ihaka, 44, and his two sons, Jahreez Ihaka, 23, and Kaden Murray, 21, has raised more than $21,000 at the time of writing.
