Updated: A young man has faced court after a mum was allegedly threatened with a handgun while waiting for her daughter to finish work at a popular Gold Coast shopping centre.
Emergency services were called after a 20-year-old Coomera man, Malachy James Shattock-Goodwin, allegedly attempted to carjack a woman at gunpoint at about 10.10pm on Saturday night.
It was understood the 39-year-old Oxenford woman was parked on Main St outside Coomera Westfield Shopping Centre, waiting for her daughter to finish work.
Mr Shattock-Goodwin allegedly approached the driver-side window and threatened the mum with a silver handgun.
“Fortunately the woman was able to exit the car and take the keys with her and run to seek help,” Superintendent Brett Jackson told reporters on Monday.
When police arrived, they arrested Mr Shattock-Goodwin and allegedly found the handgun, which was inoperable and unloaded.
“There was no direct threat of the firearm being discharged, however, it would definitely have been harrowing for the female in that vehicle,” Supt Jackson said.
Mr Shattock-Goodwin was charged with armed robbery, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle while armed, unlawful possession of a category H handgun, and possessing utensils or pipes.
He did not appear in person when his charges were mentioned at Southport Magistrates Court on Monday, with the matter adjourned to Tuesday.
