A Victorian Liberal candidate who believes “the homosexual lifestyle” is “distressingly dangerous” and carries “appalling health risks” has resigned.

The Liberal candidate who was caught saying the “homosexual lifestyle” was “distressingly dangerous” has resigned.

Peter Killin, who in February last year wrote that “Good Christians need to join a political party and influence them for the good …. not the evil that they currently stand for”, was a founding member of Cory Bernardi’s Australian Conservatives and has been endorsed by the Liberals in the Labor seat of Wills.

He said he would have voted against the preselection of Goldstein MP Tim Wilson because he is gay.

The Herald Sun understands Mr Killin has this afternoon resigned as the party’s candidate for Wills, which covers Melbourne’s inner and northern suburbs from Brunswick to Glenroy.

Mr Wilson, the Liberal MP he attacked over his sexuality, told the Herald Sun: “I’m culturally Anglican, so I learnt from a young boy to turn the other cheek and leave judgement to others.

“I’ve been absolutely consistent from preselection to election to seeking re-election that I’m a forward-looking, modern Liberal proudly representing a forward-looking modern liberal community, and that won’t change.”

In a website post last December he wrote that he believed Christians should “1. Infiltrate 2. Influence 3. Impel” to “change a party from within”.

Discussing Mr Wilson’s 2016 preselection, which he won by two votes, the Liberal candidate regrets that he was not there to vote against him.

“So, if you and I were there to participate in preselection the result = no homosexual MP,” he wrote on the website CultureWatch: Bill Muehlenberg’s commentary on issues of the day.

Mr Killin’s views on homosexuality appear to be strongly held.

Last February he made a submission to the Ruddock Religious Freedom Review in which he endorsed a 2011 blog post by Presbyterian Pastor Campbell Markham, which described the homosexual lifestyle as “distressingly dangerous” and “having appalling health risks”.

“The dangers and health risks have been well documented in many reliable medical sources for years”, Mr Killin wrote, adding: “Markham’s is a biblical perspective backed up by current medical science.

“It was written on a Christian church blog, it is a statement of fact.”

The Liberal Party has been contacted for comment.
