Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton says he is “not aware” of Nicola Gobbo ever being given immunity for potential criminal charges.
It comes as damning evidence continues to flow from the Lawyer X royal commission about Victoria Police’s handling of the gangland barrister’s controversial time as a police informer.
“No, she hasn’t been given any immunity that I’m aware of. Ever,” Commissioner Ashton told ABC Radio this morning.
He said police will be guided by the recommendations of the commission as to whether criminal charges should be laid.
Commissioner agreed the Lawyer X scandal was the biggest calamity for Victoria Police during the last “10 or 20 years”, but denied it was the “worst chapter” in the force’s history.
It was revealed this week, he had been briefed about Lawyer X’s informer role way back in 2006.
Despite the scandal, he said he was still the best person to lead Victoria Police and intended to stay in the role at least until his contract expires in June.
“It’s been a challenging 12 months and we’ve still got time to go (in the royal commission),” Commissioner Ashton said.

“I feel very confident in my team, and those around me to (keep the community safe) and confident in me leading.”
The royal commission continues on Thursday, with evidence from “Sandy White”, a pseudonym given to one of Ms Gobbo’s previous police handlers.
