Peter Stefanovic says the explosive Lawyer X story is “made for Hollywood”.
The Sky News presenter and journalist is fronting the Lawyer X: The Untold Story documentary which airs next Monday and Tuesday nights, and will be launched in Melbourne on Thursday night.
The documentary will lift the lid on one of the most controversial chapters in Australian criminal and legal history.
It will reveal how defence barrister Nicola Gobbo, known by the alias Lawyer X, represented Melbourne gangland’s biggest criminal names — all the while working for the police as a secret informer rolling over on her own clients.
“It’s got tentacles everywhere and sometimes it’s hard to keep up with the web of lies that were spun and the cover up if I can say that,’’ Stefanovic said.
“It’s a story that is made for Hollywood. I know that’s cliche to say, but it’s got all of these elements.
“Crime, danger, the mob, crooks, police, law, a famous family and who knows how it’s going to end up.
“Whoever does play her it’s a meaty role to get stuck into.”
Working with the Herald Sun’s award-winning team of reporters, Anthony Dowsley and Patrick Carlyon, who broke the story and have covered it every step of the way, the exclusive true crime documentary is set against the backdrop of Melbourne’s bloody gangland war.
Stefanovic speaks to key insiders about events that shook Victoria’s justice system and are now being examined by a royal commission, ordered late last year by the State Government.
“I think it’s a story that people are going to remember for a long, long time,’’ he said.
“It’s a story that is so unusual and so compelling and so unique that it will stay in memories because of how complex it is.
“How someone who had the trust of her clients and had the trust of police was betraying both of them. She was the ultimate double agent.”
Stefanovic will host a Q&A with Dowsley and Carlyon on Thursday night, with a sneak peek of the two-part series.
