CHRIS Soteriou has grappled with a dilemma no father ever should — how do you tell your six-year-old children their mother tried to have him killed.

In the ultimate act of betrayal, Vicky Soteriou convinced her boyfriend, Ari Dimitrakis, to attack Mr Soteriou as he left his surprise 44th birthday party in 2010.

Mr Soteriou was stabbed several times and his throat was slashed as he walked arm-in-arm with his evil wife Vicky — who was jailed for nine years for masterminding the near fatal attack.

In an interview that will air this Sunday, Mr Soteriou said he didn’t know how to tell his twins about their mother’s killer intentions. The couple also have another daughter, aged 18.

“I haven’t yet. They have actually asked me where their mother is,” Mr Soteriou told Channel 7’s Sunday Night program.

“That was as a result of my girl’s seeing my scars on my body.

“We were at the beach one day and she asked who did that and I said, ‘Mummy did it.’

“And you know that’s all I said. And they asked where their mum is. And I told them she is in jail and that’s it.”

“That’s one of the questions that I’m really challenged with. How do I tell them? When they are at the right age to understand what happened? And my fear is how they will react. That’s always in the back of my mind.”

On the night of the attack itself, when Mr Soteriou fell to the ground bleeding his first thoughts turned to his children. He asked his wife of 18 years to watch over them if he died.

“I didn’t feel any pain. It was just more like shock. I just felt the blood run down my chest and felt this warm, warm fluid running down my body and blood on my hands,” he said.

“I just remember saying to Vicky — if I don’t make it just look after the kids.”

“She must have been watching me just getting killed in the middle of the street.”

“I treasure her … I thought I had the perfect marriage. I loved her a lot.”

Sunday Night airs on Sunday August, 3 at 8.15pm on Channel 7.
