Several injured in Tarneit shooting and assault

LATEST: POLICE are investigating whether the victims of an attack in Tarneit were woken by a group of masked men before one of them was shot and three others beaten with blunt objects.

POLICE are investigating whether the victims of an attack in Tarneit were woken by a group of masked men before one of them was shot and three others beaten with blunt objects.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Eyries said early evidence suggested a group of intruders had forced their way into the Conway St home.

“We have two to four offenders. One appears to have been armed with a firearm of some description the others armed with baseball bats or similar weapons,” he said.

“We’re unable to establish at this point whether the parties are known to each other.

“What I can say at this point is that (in my) experience these are generally not of a random nature.”

Det Sgt Eyries said the 31-year-old male gunshot victim and 32-year-old female were residents of the home, while the other two victims appeared to be visiting for the night.

“All occupants are assisting with our inquiries,” he said.

“This would be distressing in any neighbourhood.

“We ask anyone with information contact Crimestoppers, it happened at 4am and we generally find there are a number of people on the road at that time.”

A 34-year-old man, a woman aged 23 and the 32-year-old woman suffered various injuries after being assaulted during the altercation.

They were all taken to The Alfred hospital and were in a stable condition.

Neighbours of the victims are understood to have an extensive security system, which is being assessed by police.

Local tradesman Robert said he regularly had to replace doors after break-ins into homes still under construction on the street.

“You’ll get to work in the morning and someone will have ripped the door off it’s hinges looking for something to steal despite the fact the house isn’t finished,” he said.

“Other than that it’s been a pretty quiet street I haven’t noticed any problems for the people living there.”

Nikhil Patel said he was concerned over the safety of his wife and young daughter after waking to learn of a shooting two doors down from his home.

“We had no idea what had happened,” he said.

“I never spoke to them ... I’d seen them working in the backyard and waved on the street.

“It’s really scary actually.

“We came here in March and it’s a quiet area.

“Just two or three days ago someone tried to break into a home on another street at 6am in the morning.”

Mr Patel said the incident had encouraged him to install video monitors and security systems in his home.

“That’s what we need actually, I’ll be installing in a few days,” he said

“My neighbours are getting security installed so we do try to do what we can.”
