Retail stores in suburbs including Sunbury and Chadstone have been targeted by a con involving claims of a person being overcharged and then demanding a cash refund.

Scammers are targeting small businesses in Melbourne with a con using distraction and EFTPOS machines.
The scam involves at least two people buying things from a store or restaurant and while one distracts the shop attendant, the other enters the wrong price into the machine.

They then pay the upped price with a stolen card and claim they have been overcharged, before demanding a cash refund.
In similar cases, the con artists change the transaction from a payment to a refund when they are handed the machine to enter their pin.
Criminals have targeted restaurants, retail stores and florists in the CBD, Docklands, Chadstone, Sunbury, Fitzroy and Carlton, as well as some regional areas.
In one instance, three men targeted a Fitzroy North restaurant on St Georges Rd.
The men paid using a stolen card and changed the price on the machine so they were overcharged and demanded a refund.
They were refunded onto another card.
