The gunman ruthlessly bashed a man aged in his 70s during the violent late-night ambush at Sunshine.

Police said the bandit stepped from behind a car park dumpster as a group of people stood talking after a function at a Talmage St venue.

He lashes out at a male victim with the weapon and also kicks him.

Blows to the chest, arm and head were inflicted on that man during the confrontation, at 1am on Tuesday.

Police said the gunman picked up a set of car keys dropped by a victim but fled towards Albion railway station after the vehicle’s alarm was triggered.

A mobile phone stolen during the robbery was later recovered near the scene.

“We just need to lock this bloke up. This is unnecessarily violent. It’s just unacceptable.”

The robber was described as Caucasian, 182cm tall, of thin build with light-coloured eyes.

He wore dark loose-fitting pants, a dark windcheater, runners and a dark balaclava.
