A UNIVERSITY student has told how he was ambushed in a park by a gang of robbers who knocked out his teeth, before stealing his phone and spending his money on late night takeaway snacks.
First year business student James Richter was leaving the University of Melbourne to head home after a late-night study session when he was bashed and threatened by thieves who demanded he hand over his belongings and unlock his mobile phone.
The attack in Carlton left the 19-year-old feeling unsafe in his home city.
“I don’t feel fully comfortable with walking around at night in the city, which is a bit sad,” Mr Richter said.
“Growing up here, it’s been really a safe city to me but just that thought in the back of (my) head now that (I’m) not 100 per cent safe and that (I’m) going to have to be vigilant.”
The young Hillside man suffered facial injuries, including two broken teeth and a bruised eye socket, during the mugging which came the night before an important university test.
Mr Richter is a Monash University student but was studying at Melbourne’s Parkville campus with friends on September 16.
He was walking through Lincoln Square about 9.30pm when he was confronted by between six and eight teens of African appearance.
“I would like to know what really drove them … it’s sad that people have to resort to this to get their kicks or thrills,” Mr Richter said.
One of the males punched him several times and the group demanded Mr Richter lie on the ground and hand over his belongings including a laptop, phone and wallet.
He then walked the victim towards the steps on to the park terrace and demanded he unlock his iPhone.
The group fled northwest on Bouverie St and about an hour later was caught on camera buying a halal snack pack from a kebab shop in Smith St, Fitzroy.
Bystanders at the nearby Swanston St tram stop helped a bleeding Mr Richter and called 000.
He was taken to hospital and underwent dental surgery to repair his broken teeth.
The teen said there were other people in Lincoln Square at the time of the mugging, and police were hopeful someone may have information that could help the case.
The main offender, who allegedly punched the victim several times to the face, is described as being about 190cm tall and was wearing a black puffer jacket and black beanie.
Detective Senior Constable Brendon Stock said that while police did not believe these crimes were a regular occurrence, other university students should be vigilant, walk in groups and in well-lit areas.
Police had obtained CCTV of the men and Sen-Constable Stock said investigators hoped someone would come forward with their names.
“We’re quite confident in finding them … the images are quite clear,” he said.
